A-10 Patches

The Long History of the A-10 Thunderbolt

The A-10 Thunderbolt is a twin-engine aircraft designed for close air support. With its 30mm GAU-A/8 Avenger autocannon and thousands of pounds of munitions on the wings, the aircraft has provided great comfort to our infantry deployed on the ground. The A-10 has been deployed in every major conflict since the first Gulf War. Though the A-10 is slated to be used until at least 2023, there are many in the USAF who will surely hate to see this dependable aircraft go.

Usage of the A-10 in the U.S. Military

Developed in the 1970s to replace the prop-driven Douglas A-1 Skyraider, the A-10 quickly became a powerful tool for close air support in modern conflicts. With over 1,200 pounds of titanium armor it is extremely durable and able to survive hits from 20mm explosive and armor-piercing projectiles. It is also designed to be relatively cheap to operate and repair.

Many of the parts are interchangeable on each side of the aircraft and designed for rough conditions. The A-10 can take off from short or damaged runways and potentially even a long stretch of highway. This makes it the perfect weapon system for close air support. In addition, the A-10 is the first jet-powered aircraft to run both of its engines on a biofuel mixture. The A-10 is also being used for weather research. Because of its durability and armor, it is able to withstand high-speed hail storms that take place in upper atmospheric weather events.
