ACU Patches

A History of Army Combat Uniforms

The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) has been developed and adapted many times since its debut in 2004. It replaced the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) and the Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) that had been used since the 1980s. Originally the ACU used the Universal Camouflage Pattern, a mixture of tan, gray, and green meant to be effective in most environments.

In 2014 the military switched to the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP). The uniform has a number of pockets and hooks for storage and soldiers now wear an infrared tag to identify each other in low visibility. The material is fire retardant preventing some third-degree burns and almost all second-degree burns and is also treated with permethrin as an insect repellant.
