Regimental Combat Team Patches

What is a Regimental Combat Team?

The Regimental Combat Team (RCT) is a reinforced regiment within a division that is given the capability to operate on its own. These unit structures are often assigned artillery and armored units along with engineers and reconnaissance units detached from the RCT’s division.

A History of Regimental Combat Teams in the U.S. Military

The concept of the RCT was developed in the late 1930s and used widely throughout WWII and Korea. The military has since been restructured, and now the only branch to use the RCT concept is the Marine Corps. These units are capable of using combined arms tactics while providing flexibility for the division that deploys them.

One of the most famous of these units is the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The 442nd was formed as a segregated Japanese American unit during WWII. The RCT fought in Italy, France, and Germany, and is the most decorated unit in American military history. They are remembered for their famous charge to save the surrounded men of the “lost battalion” in the Vosges mountain. Even after relieving the men of 141st, the 442nd continued to push the Germans back until they were finally pulled back after sustaining crippling casualties.
