Description
United States Navy Super Carriers of the Cold War
Patch Collection – 11-Piece Set including two Cold War gift patches!
In the decade following World War II, the United States Navy stood at a crossroads. Its aircraft carrier fleet was built around proven WWII-era designs—the Essex Class, which had fought through the war, and the Midway Class, constructed during WWII but commissioned between 1945 and 1947.
As jet aircraft rapidly entered service in the early 1950s—most notably during the Korean War—it became clear that existing carriers were no longer sufficient. Jet fighters and attack aircraft demanded longer decks, stronger launch systems, and entirely new operational concepts.
The answer was a fundamentally new carrier design, beginning with the Forrestal Class. These ships introduced steam catapults, significantly larger flight decks and hangar bays, and—most importantly—the angled flight deck, allowing aircraft to launch and recover simultaneously. This innovation transformed naval aviation and set the standard for all future carriers.
Due to their unprecedented size, capability, and power projection, these ships became known unofficially as “Super Carriers.” They defined U.S. naval dominance throughout the Cold War and laid the foundation for the modern carrier fleet that exists today.
