Description
The USS Carl Vinson is the third Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. It is named after a congressman from Georgia named Carl Vinson, who headed the House Naval Affairs Committee and helped get the Two-Ocean Navy act passed. The ship was launched in March of 1980 and was deployed in several Operations including, Desert Strike, Iraqi Freedom, Southern Watch, and Enduring Freedom. In 2011, the body of Osama Bin Laden was buried at sea from the deck of the USS Carl Vinson.The ship was also host to the first ever NCAA basketball game aboard an aircraft carrier when North Carolina played Michigan State later that year on Veterans Day.
