At Camp Peary she was commissioned on July 12, 1943. After moving to Camp Parks in California, she was sent to Advance Base Depot Port Hueneme. During her stay, the battalion became part of history for building some of the staging for the filming of "The Fighting Seabees". They were tasked with building an amphibious training center, the battalion's camp, a liberty ship pier, and a tank farm.
